Wieso sollte er, da er doch sterben musste, nicht leben?

„Heiner Müller’s death was a bit hefty, then came the death of Frau Berghaus – a deep hit. But the end of Take That – well, what’s there to say…! “

Einar Schleef

Einar Schleef died young on 21 July 2001. On 17 January 2024, he would have celebrated his 80th birthday. His unique creative energy made him a defining figure of the 20th century theatre avant-garde. As a director and author, he revolutionised theatre in the East and in the West. He was a painter, set designer, photographer, experimental film-maker, and also acted in his own plays. He brought the chorally spoken word to the theatre stage and broke many taboos in the process. Schleef’s work evoked strong emotions and infected the dramatic arts for a long time. Today though he‘s almost forgotten.

„Remembrance is hard work“, was Schleef’s motto. On that note: Let’s remember and celebrate him!
