Sternschuppen

Sternschuppen is run by artists and curators Nouchka Wolf, Valentin Wagner, and Elena Dorn at the Volksbühne Pavilion. Operating as a satellite to its mothership Volksbühne, Sternschuppen remains curatorially independent (a „leak to the outside“—Anna Heesen) while being infrastructurally linked to the theater.

The objective is to create a space for autonomous, non-commercial, transdisciplinary art projects and to reclaim Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz as a central „cultural marketplace,“ particularly following its appropriation by right-wing conservative forces during the pandemic. The focus lies on introducing so-called „low culture“ into established spaces, thereby transforming and reopening these locations.

Due to the disappearance of autonomous spaces, the migration of subcultures to other districts, and the takeover by real estate speculators, Berlin-Mitte is at risk of losing its image as an open, diverse, and accessible neighborhood. Sternschuppen aims to counteract this trend by hosting events at the central Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz that engage the Volksbühne audience and passersby, but most importantly the local residents who have been pushed to the margins by commercially-oriented developments.
