Videothek
Every Wednesday night, the VIDEOTHEK on the first floor of the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, presents film screenings and various performative live formats taking up aspects of the visual content in discursive and exclusive ways.
Highlights of the new season 2024/2025 are:
- Film screenings: VIDEOTHEK shows films that have no place elsewhere, or have run under the radar, or fallen into oblivion over time.
- Scripted Reality is hosted by Martha Mechow, who presents new discoveries made on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok as well as experimental film classics from cinematheques across the globe.
- Film lectures: The journalist, biologist and philosopher Cord Riechelmann presents films accompanied by brief lectures on topics referred to in the visual material shown.
- G.v.K. Live Dubbing, conceived and hosted by Milan Herms and Leonie Jenning, is a mix of theory and practice, showing fragments of film classics that are live-dubbed with forgotten non-fictional texts.
- TEENITUS – What can we hear, when there is nothing left? This new audio series and a changing cast of radioplay writers focus on the disappearance of the physical body in theatre contexts and explores the materiality of that which remains.
- SEX SHOW XXL: The actor Ann Göbel presents her favourite works from the world of cinema. In conversations and performance parts, she and her guests will often come dangerously close to the screen narrative — and this is where the magic happens.
- Heroes of the Western Worlds Premium Movies Entertainment: The film series curated by Musa Gahain-Sama focuses on African film art and popular (sub)cultures to make the VIDEOTHEK a place where the Afro-German diaspora and other interested parties can engage in an intercultural conversation without being constrained by Eurocentric biases and interpretations.
- KONTAKT – Ghosts in the Machine: In this new KONTAKT series, video artist Luis August Krawen dedicates himself to exploring communication with the beyond, examining the inherently theatrical process of establishing contact with the other(world) through the lens of novel forms of rituality colonising today’s technology-driven world.
