VERBAL TRANSFER 29

Born in Karl-Marx-Stadt (Chemnitz) in 1984, filmmaker Jan Soldat spent his first few years in the GDR. After civilian service at Chemnitz Hospital he took up studies in mathematical economics and later shifted to mechanical engineering, to give up both in order to make films. In the years 2006-2008, first fictional short films were produced in a Chemnitz film workshop run by friends. They explored how close the camera’s view could actually get to real life. The tension between closeness and distance, openness and restraint, has continued to occupy Jan Soldat in his endeavour to get to the bottom of how human relationships in all their varieties really work. Unlike conventional cinema, sexuality is never used as an end in itself, instead it is a necessity for him to be able to address and negotiate the fundamental questions concerning human intimacy, power, vulnerability, and care.

The first part of the programme introduces Soldat’s early short films produced at „Chemnitzer Filmwerkstatt e. V.“, as well as film portrayals produced at the Film University Babelsberg as part of his studies.
