Alternatives for Germany, Third Way for Europe, Non-alignment for the Universe | A theme night at Roter Salon, Sternfoyer and Grüner Salon

Futures East #2 sets out to break the silence surrounding the East – also referred to as the Global East – offering an alternative to the current feeling of political powerlessness at the national, European, and global levels, and calling our attention to the various forms in which a different society was envisioned and put to the test in the East. These attempts ranged from land reform and the abolition of educational privilege in the GDR—including the advancement of women’s rights—to trans-ethnic, economically self-governing structures such as those in Yugoslavia, and the alliance of socialist countries within the Non-Aligned Movement, which was based on solidarity with the Global South, extending far beyond the polar opposites of the superpowers United States and Soviet Union. These political histories are inscribed in the biographies of so-called “post-Eastern” people (post-Soviet, post-Yugoslav, post-East German). Futures East #2 is a window to their stories.
