Vergessene Arbeitskämpfe - Ein Punk-Abend

Tournament in the blood-soaked desert

This year’s world cup will take place in Qatar. The infrastructure for this event was built by labour migrants from Asia and Africa. They were made to work in inhumane conditions, attracted by the promise of a good salary. In the authoritarian desert country, neither workers’ rights nor trade unions exist. The traditional Kafala system that allows to subject labourers to serfdom is officially abolished. But the passports of the workers are retained nevertheless. Supervisory authorities: zero. To call this modern slavery is certainly not overstated.

There was no outcry, although the British daily The Guardian has reported that in the course of the world cup preparations in Qatar more than 6,500 work migrants from India, Pakistan, Nepal Bangladesh and Sri Lanka had lost their lives under unclear circumstances. Qatar does not contest these figures but argues that the death toll is “within the scope of expectation”.

Amnesty International is now demanding compensation from FIFA amounting to 440 million US dollars for those affected by human rights violations, and their families. This August, reports of resistance in Qatar have reached media in Germany: 60 migrant workers had dared to protest against unpaid wages and were promptly arrested. They will not have been the last…

This is a solidarity event for all the people who died in Qatar and their families, and for all those who courageously engage in the fight for human and workers‘ rights out there.

Litbarski

Ignoring popular subcultural trends, Litbarski released, in 2016, their self-titled mini album doffing their caps to the sound of US punk rock and hardcore of the late ’80s and early ’90s. A quartet now since 2019, the Berlin-based band bring a wearout to the tour bus leaving their elbow prints on uncounted counters in Germany and all over Europe.
