Plattenspieler

On 8 October we present the fourth edition in our series Plattenspieler at Roter Salon with guest musician Stella Sommer. The singer-songwriter with the dark voice has, after four critically acclaimed albums with the band project „Die Heiterkeit“, released her first solo album in 2018, with two more to follow.

Two turntables, a camera and a beamer, two mics, one screen – the stage is set for the event series Plattenspieler. Host Thomas Meinecke and his guest will muse about music, cultural contexts, visual designs and personal stories about and experiences with music. The writer, musician and DJ, Thomas Meinecke, is excited to see which records Stella Sommer will bring along for the show. Meinecke, too, will pick records from his own vast collection to play to his guest and see what she thinks of them. As there are no preliminary talks between the two, the show lives off the spontaneous reaction of the musicians.

Plattenspieler is about pop music in all its excessive facets, from Peter Brötzmann’s free jazz, to obscure Appalachian folk of the early twentieth century, and Henry Flynt’s hillbilly avant-garde, which Meinecke himself became acquainted with just recently through an evening with Laurel Halo, who is half his age. It is the shows individual guest who always plays the first fiddle…
