The „Mare Nostrum“ sea rescue programme of the Italian coast guard was started, but ended again after the EU failed to show „solidarity“, civilian sea rescuers were criminalised and the values of the EU, the bearer of the Nobel Peace Prize, were reduced to absurdity. People seeking protection died as victims of the EU’s „left to die policy“ – a deliberate failure to rescue, an organised irresponsibility. Since 2014, more than 27,600 refugees have died in the Mediterranean. In addition, there are deals with Turkey and other authoritarian regimes, the closure of the so-called „Balkan route“, illegal pushbacks. Through the planned „Common European Asylum System“ (CEAS), the state of emergency on the Greek islands is to be turned into a new normality of disenfranchisement. Especially in view of the expected migration due to increasing climate catastrophes, this is a horror scenario that must be prevented urgently.
That is why the Grüner Salon opens its second season under the curatorship of RomaTrial e.V. with the tried and tested „Kafana Lab“ format on the topic of the supposedly „civilised“ Europe, at whose external borders people die every day. This heralds the focus series „Road of Civilisation“ with a focus on the EU’s deadly migration policy. The title comes from the song of the same name by our Phrala and artist Dragan Cordes, who died in August 2023, and to whom the series is dedicated.
