Panel discussion: 19:30
Rap concert: 21:00
Roma have lived in Europe for 1,000 years. But their history is marked by persecution and exclusion from society. Despite the important contributions of Roma to European cultures, economic systems and, not least, politics, discrimination and racism continue to manifest themselves in many forms to this day – across Europe and also in Germany.
For more than 30 years, Roma have been fleeing war, persecution and systematic discrimination to Germany. Deportations take place regularly: Most of those affected are people who fled the Yugoslav wars back in the 1990s and are now living in a system of chain tolerations in the second generation without a permanent right to stay, as well as people fleeing Moldova, where structural Antigypsyism forces them into inhumane living conditions. However, instead of recognising its historical responsibility towards the Roma minority, Germany continues to seal itself off and is currently planning to declare Moldova a “safe country of origin” in addition to the Western Balkan countries.
At the last event in the “Kafana Lab” series, we will be looking at the situation in which Roma live in Europe, the reasons for their flight and migration and the current situation in Germany. The Roma Centre / Roma Antidiscrimination Network will describe the situation based on its many years of practical experience with Roma refugees and its many research trips to various countries. Following the presentation, we will enter into dialogue with the audience, strengthened as always with a freshly brewed mokka coffee and a slivovitz shot.
Followed by a rap concert by:
Kefaet Prizreni aka Romanimus Pryme – Klasse X (Essen)
Selamet Prizreni aka GIP5Y – DZA (Essen)
Kastro Microphone Master (Niš, Serbia)
The Kafana Lab is funded by the „Spartenoffene Förderung“ of the Senate Department for Culture and Community.
