On 26 March, Musa Gahein-Sama presents the second episode of a new film series called Heroes of the Western Worlds – Cine Afrika.

Wives on Strike (2016), is a thrilling comedy by the director, script-writer and actor Omoni Oboli. It tells the story of a group of market women who unite in order to prevent a forced marriage, by calling a sex strike.

Inspired by contemporary debates in Nigerian society, the film engages with solidarity structures, female resistance strategies and the struggle for women‘s rights in Nigeria with sharp wit, humour and warmth.

The film was a huge success in Nigeria showcasing all the strengths of Nollywood cinema. Omoni Oboli once again proves that entertainment and political activism are by no means incompatible. As one of the leading Nollywood directors, she emphasises female perspectives in the Nigerian film industry. Her film is part of a new generation of Nollywood productions taking up political issues and transforming them into light-hearted entertainment.
