Gefühle am Ende der Welt
Solace, or consolation, crucially implies we no longer seek salvation by preventing disaster, but instead look elsewhere for relief. Hope’s little sister is certainly not the most combative emotional state, and the grief-stricken among us may rightly feel insulted by the recourse to solace. But if consolation could help to make that which could not be prevented more bearable – would it then not be a well-meaning ally in political struggles and under oppressive conditions? In our second series of events we will focus on the ambivalences of consolation and on comforting strategies, and jointly explore whether it’s possible to find solace on your own, or whether it has to be offered by others. The step from grief to solace is not a big one, but rather small, as Adorno reminds us.
