Media legacies of GDR are mostly white. Migrants and East Germans of Colour and their lives in the GDR are seldom shown or seen. The online exhibition in collaboration with the archive De-Zentralbild present a range of private photographs and memories of contract workers, students, political emigrants and second-generation migrants in the GDR collected in research across the globe, including Cuba, Mosambique and Vietnam. De-Zentralbild shows: the GDR had its own history of migration. The photographs and photo essays are testament to the manifold ways of life and experiences of these migrants, and complemented with important contributions and narratives ot those who returned to their home countries in later life.
