AKE DIKHEA?: Remembrance Culture(s) and Film – Panel Discussion
Free admission
In English
Who is remembered in our society, whose memory is preserved and which historical crimes are ignored?
It took almost 40 years for the Federal Republic of Germany to recognise the Nazi genocide committed against the Sinti and Roma of Europe. The memorial to their murdered ancestors is only ten years old, but because of a new city railway line it is to be partially destroyed again. The genocide of the Bosniaks during the Bosnian War in the 1990s is another gaping hole in the Western European culture of remembrance. How can the film medium help to overcome these shortcomings? What are the obstacles? And what position do memories and narratives of indigenous and nomadic cultures from Asia hold in the Eurocentric narrative?
On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the inauguration of the Memorial to the Murdered Sinti* and Roma* of Europe, film and media makers from marginalised groups will speak at this panel discussion about gaps in the culture(s) of remembrance in Germany and Europe and sharpen the audience’s view with their unique perspectives.
With:
Melina Borčak, journalist and film writer
Charles Newland, film director
Alisi Telengut, (animation) artist
Moderation:
Vicente Rodriguez Fernandez, human rights activist, screenwriter and cartoonist
The panel discussion is part of the 6th International Festival of Romani Film AKE DIKHEA?, which takes place from 24 – 30 October 2022 in the BABYLON and the Grüner Salon of the Volksbühne. Financed with funds from the Spartenoffene Förderung of the Senate Department for Culture and Europe.
