Film, performance and discourse evening on continuities of disenfranchisement
Free admission
In English
On the 10th anniversary of the shipwreck off the Italian island of Lampedusa on 3 October 2013, we commemorate the more than 27,600 refugees who have since drowned in the Mediterranean because of the EU’s „left to die policy“ – a deliberate non-rescue, an organised irresponsibility. Above all, we look at the continuities of disenfranchisement of non-European migrants – sea rescue is not a crime!
The event is part of the series „Road of Civilisation“ with a focus on the EU’s deadly migration policy. The title comes from the song of the same name by our Phrala and artist Dragan Cordes, who died in August 2023, and to whom the series is dedicated.
Film Screening:
Forensis: The Shipwreck
On 14 June 2023, the Adriana, a boat leaving Libya for Italy with hundreds of migrants on board, sank inside the Greek Search and Rescue zone in the Mediterranean Sea. This would become the deadliest migrant shipwreck in recent history. The digital reconstruction of the boat’s trajectory by Forensic Architectures reveals inconsistencies in the Hellenic Coast Guard’s account and indicates that over 600 people drowned as a result of actions taken by the Coast Guard.
