Maya Resistance against the train of death
The cobstruction of the so-called „Mayan Train“ in southeastern Mexico is planned to be completed this year. The 1,500-kilometer-long line is supposed to boost the local economy by connecting Mexico’s Caribbean coastal resorts with Mayan ruins. But what the Mexican government presents as progress, with the support of German investors like Deutsche Bahn, mostly means destruction of the rainforest, disregard for the rights of indigenous peoples, land grabbing and displacement, as well as additional militarization in one of the country’s most troubled regions.
In April of this year, we had the opportunity to learn more about the destruction to be expected from the cynically named „Mayan Train“, but also about the resistance against it, at the screening of the film Polinizadorxs. At that time, we were able to connect online with Angel Sulub, a Mayan activist from Quintana Roo. Now we are fortunate to have him in Berlin to share with us the current state of the struggle against this train of death.

Resistencia Maya al tren de la muerte – una conversación con Ángel Sulub
La construción del mal llamado „Tren Maya“ en el sureste de México se terminará este año. Se supone que la línea, de 1.500 kilómetros de longitud, impulsará la economía local al conectar los centros turísticos de la costa caribeña de México con las ruinas Mayas. Pero lo que el gobierno mexicano presenta como progreso, con el apoyo de inversores alemanes como Deutsche Bahn, significa sobre todo destrucción de la selva tropical, desprecio de los derechos de los pueblos indígenas, despojo de tierras y desplazamientos, así como una militarización adicional en una de las regiones más conflictivas del país.
En abril de este año, tuvimos la oportunidad de aprender más sobre la destrucción que cabe esperar del cínicamente llamado „Tren Maya“, pero también sobre la resistencia contra él, en la proyección de la película Polinizadorxs. En aquel momento, pudimos conectar en linea con Ángel Sulub, activista Maya de Quintana Roo. Ahora tenemos la suerte de tenerlo en Berlín para compartir con nosotros el estado actual de la lucha contra este tren de la muerte.
