„In our shared grief, we seek not to equate experiences, but to transform despair into hope and build compassion on the foundation of our common humanity. We remind ourselves and the world that occupation, oppression and conflict are not inevitable.“
Organisers of the Joint Israeli-Palestinian Memorial Day
This year marks the 19th Joint Israeli-Palestinian Memorial Day, organised by the Israeli-Palestinian organisations Combatants for Peace and Parents Circle Family Forum. It is the unique and largest jointly organised Israeli-Palestinian peace event. Last year, more than 15,000 people took part in person and around 200,000 virtually from all over the world. The event takes place every year on „Yom HaZikaron“, a national day of mourning for Israelis.
This year’s ceremony takes place in the shadow of Hamas‘ terrorist attack on Israel on 7 October and the subsequent war in Gaza. The event stands in contrast to any one-sided illumination of the spiral of violence in Israel and Palestine, draws attention to the suffering of both sides and does not give up the belief in joint political commitment. It is an important step towards reconciliation, peace and hope. The ceremony will focus on the stories of Israeli and Palestinian children whose lives have been shaped by the conflict from the very beginning. What will the future look like for the next generation in Israel and Palestine? How can we convey hope in the midst of this tragedy?
The introduction will be in German, the live broadcast in Arabic and Hebrew with English subtitles.
The live broadcast is organised by the New Israel Fund (NIF) Germany, the Heinrich Böll Foundation Berlin, the EAPPI Network Germany e.V. and the Alliance for Middle East Peace (ALLMEP), with the kind support of RomaTrial e.V. in the Grüner Salon of the Volksbühne.
