Christmas Ukranian Style – what for?
Throughout the year we’ve been discussing, over an Aperol Spritz served with a compostable sustainable organic straw, disasters – ecological collapse, bad food, bad government, understaffing, Corona consequences, wars ravaging countries and minds. The possibilities of doom seem unmatched in their diversity. But can artists and creatives really change the messy situation our planet is in? Is it possible for art to remain on the sidelines of global politics until doomsday? Is art not needed on the Titanic? The answer to all these questions is, of course: no. Art is in no position to stop people from jumping right into the cesspool. But it can offer ways for people to use a scale to weigh themselves, or feel ashamed, or get upset and up in arms against things. It is only through art that we can make sense of ourselves and process the madness that is happening. Of course, art must always be political. Art is not just a relaxing facial massage for a bourgeois audience. And a world without artists would be as boring as shit.
