From Hoyerswerda to the forgotten Afghanistan – Discussion

At the end of the week-long series of events and exhibition “Germany your children – continuities of right-wing violence”, that take place on the occasion of the 30th and 31st anniversary of the pogroms of Rostock-Lichtenhagen and Hoyerswerda from the 17th – 23rd September, a discussion will draw attention to parallels from Hoyerswerda 1991 to current problems in Germany’s treatment of refugees. Racist treatment is neither a specialty of East Germany nor an exclusive phenomenon of the 1990s.

The exemplary treatment of refugees of the Ukraine war currently shows in a scandalous way that a humane and fair refugee policy is possible – and that it has not been applied to Roma who fled the Balkan wars or the life-threatening discrimination in Moldova, nor to refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, Africa and other countries with a majority with a non-white population. In this panel discussion, the guests explain the continuities of racist treatment of refugees of colour and of refugees facing multiple discrimination.

The event is part of the week-long series of events and the exhibition “Germany your children – continuities of right-wing violence”, which will take place on the occasion of the 30th and 31st anniversary of the pogroms in Rostock-Lichtenhagen and Hoyerswerda from the 17th – 23rd September.
