From Resentment to Pogrom. An Antiziganism-Critical Perspective on Rostock-Lichtenhagen 1992 – Lecture by Merle Stöver

It is generally agreed upon – at least by the social left that the Lichtenhagen pogrom had immense significance in highlighting the level of racism in existence in reunified Germany. However, the fact that these riots were primarily the result of anti-gypsy rumours and resentment that politicians and the media had been using since 1990 to stir up hatred against Romanians seeking asylum to fuel the debate about the “asylum compromise” is still largely unknown.

In her lecture, social worker and researcher Merle Stöver, examines the attacks of Rostock-Lichtenhagen in 1992 from a decidedly antiziganism-critical perspective, basing her findings on the evaluation of over 600 local newspaper articles on the topic of the pogroms.

The event is part of the week-long series of events and the exhibition “Germany your children – continuities of right-wing violence”, which will take place on the occasion of the 30th and 31st anniversary of the pogroms in Rostock-Lichtenhagen and Hoyerswerda from the 17th – 23rd September.
