The Schmauswaberl, home turf of Voodoo Jürgens über EsRAP and Kerosin95, is at the centre of Philipp Jedicke‘s cineastic eulogy to the pop scene of Austria’s capital, a strange bunch of oddballs with considerable appeal. VIENNA CALLING is another piece in the mosaic of the celebrated „Rock ’n’ Roll Swindle“ within the Wien-Dream-Machine, providing intimate insights into the daily life and ideas of these dazzling artists always playing the big stage even in the smallest basement bars.

Director Philipp Jedicke is no stranger to dealing with the music scene and strong personalities. But instead of some quaint individual and instrumentalist, VIENNA CALLING pays tribute to a whole scene and shining Viennese musical icons at the fringes of mainstream. Between urban ASMR ambience, moments of delicious intimacy and live performances, VIENNA CALLING wonderfully meanders behind the scenes and in front of the stage. The Vienna music pub Schmauswaberl is Jedicke‘s anchoring point and projection platform for the dreamlike reality of his protagonists. From Voodoo Jürgens and Der Nino aus Wien, who both can’t seem to escape the hyper-real, reckless Beisl aura of their art personae, even in private settings, to musical family field trips and the erstwhile school horror described by the duo of siblings EsRap, to wedding dress shopping with Kerosin95, Jedicke creates a multifaceted cinematic picture of Vienna’s dazzling pop culture, which seems to draw its charming appeal from the mix of Austrian traditionalism and contemporary urban life.
