The Ford sewing machinists strike of 1968

It was on 7 June 1968, when women sewing machinists at Ford Motor Company Dagenham plant in London walked out. They had been re-categorised to ‘unskilled workers’ and their wage was 15% less than the rate received by men. The women had enough They demanded equal pay. The Workers Union tried to contain the strike, to no avail. It eventually resulted in a halt to all car production at the Dagenham plant. Enter politicians: Barbara Castle, First Lady of the British Left, intervened and after a seven-hour negotiation marathon, a deal was made resulting in an increased rate of pay for women to 8% below that of men. However, the women failed to get upgraded to the category ‘skilled workers.’ „We have won the battle, but lost the war“, one of them is reported to have summed up the result. The movement ultimately resulted in the passing of the Equal Pay Act in 1970, which is why the sewing machinists strike is often described as one of the biggest feminist achievements regardless. Yet until this day, equal pay is far from being fully implemented.
