Velvet Voice Club • TEXTE ZUR KUNST
The Velvet Voice Club invites you to a performance evening at the Volksbühne that accompanies the March issue of TEXTE ZUR KUNST. Co-conceived by Luce deLire, the issue is dedicated to the lived experiences of individual trans artists and addresses persistent prejudices in the art world and its institutions. Maxi Wallenhorst and Aristilde Kirby will stage their respective texts from the magazine at Roter Salon, while Mine Pleasure Bouvar permeates the space with tunes. Wallenhorst’s reading evokes poetics that responds to two accusations trans aesthetics often face: “too literal!” and “too abstract!” She then uses the terms metabolism and alienation to counter these charges. Kirby’s performance Tulipmania ~ Mk.II: For The Life Of Me, on the other hand, is an attempt to process a personal trauma in relation to the vectors of race and trans femininity. By recalling the role of the Dutch tulip trade of the 17th century as a very early marker of capitalism, she engages with the entanglements between libidinous, political, and aesthetic economies. The trans*activist DJ Mine Pleasure Bouvar crosses genres and sounds to create new narratives with a musical set full of fluid transitions and in-betweens.
