The Drama Is Present:

Faust is now Margarete Faust, created by Fatma Aydemir. Following her novels Ellbogen and Dschinns, which have also been adapted for the stage, Aydemir has written her first theatre play.

Entering her later years, professor Margarete Faust is revered by her students as an icon in the field of gender studies. She has long been a thorn in the side of the right-wing government in Germany, and when word gets out that Fast has helped a student get an abortion, a scandal erupts that destroys her career. Mephisto uses the moment to remind Faust of the sensual, physical aspects of life and introduces her to Karim. Karim is gay, and needs a residence permit – and Faust as a supervisor for his PhD project. Erotically drawn to Karim, Faust enters an ambiguous sphere of seductive transgressions in which conflicts of interest and unequal power relations create an uncontrollable momentum of their own.

The world premiere directed by Selen Kara (Grillo Theater Essen) was shown at the festival radikal jung and during Berlin’s Autor:innentheatertage. The book Doktormutter Faust is published by Suhrkamp Theater. Now Fatma Aydemir presents the book in Berlin, supported by members of the Volksbühne ensemble and Patty Kim Hamilton as her conversation partner.
