The Drama Is Present:
Antiope who? Who’s she? Antiope is no ancient woman; she is a presence. When she got pregnant, she decided to leave the wild days of freedom behind and return to the patriarch’s house. Putting her feet up on the table of the Oval Office, she now wants to talk. Her father, the offended King, wants revenge, not talk.
Anne Jelena Schulte reimagines Antiope as a dazzling, queer figure who attracts both hatred and a subtle kind of fascination from those surrounding her. Walls are being raised, perspectives are getting downsized and alien bodies domesticated – to no avail. Antiope is a singular character. The theatre text reflects social and political dynamics that are acutely relevant in many contemporary democracies.
