Mea Shearim, the City of 100 Gates, is a part of Jerusalem populated almost entirely by ultra-Orthodox Jews. You have to go and live there to get a grasp of this exciting, strange world shrouded in spirituality – like the author Tuvia Tenenbom did, who grew up in Mea Shearim and returned to it after so many years in New York, in order to confront his own past: Tenenbom himself comes from an ultra-Orthodox family, was educated in a traditional yeshiva, and was predicted a great future as a rabbi. He was setting out on a journey into his childhood.
