Parole Text:Buch

„Unsere Arbeit macht uns frei“ [Our work sets us free], was the slogan a high-ranking Nationalsocialist coined in the midst of the Second World War to inspire his so-called national comrades. In doing so, he not only drew on the traditional idea that Germans would take much pride in their work and had a special relationship to working. He also adapted the slogan from inscriptions on the gates of Nazi concentration camps in Auschwitz, Dachau, Sachsenhausen and others, saying „Arbeit macht frei“. Handling Nazi slogans and ideology remains a tough challenge. On the one hand, this phrase (and others) are tabooed, on the other hand, far-right extremist and parties like to allude to them and play with them turning them into hashtags on social media. Our society, however, needs to rise to the challenge of coming to terms with the  historical past in order to face up to the problems of the present.
