Le Grand Ordinaire is an amazing collage of musical images and surreal songs recounting tales of travelling folks, runaways, getaways and escapists. Never arriving anywhere, the fear of strangers, the fear of being an outsider are recurring themes, while circus life is evoked like a vague memory making its presence felt. On stage, Meret Becker and her band The Tiny Teeth create musical images, comparable to the sound track of some mind trip consisting of miniatures played out of a musical box or a snow globe. All the romantic and bizarre instruments of musical clowns are there: the musical clock, the toy piano, musical glasses, the musical saw. They are singing the song of sailor-performers who are fluent in all languages, often simultaneously, and who – full steam ahead – are bearing down on the cliffs. Dishevelled hair, yet standing tall. And the big top is creaking and moaning like a sinking ship, but not one rat will desert the boat, as this spectacle smacks – or better: reeks of adventure.
