That’s what it’s about: The debate about so-called clan crime has been booming for years. An ever-growing structure of police measures, media reports, entertainment formats and (pseudo-)scientific contributions fantasises a threat that is to be cracked down on. The consequence is raids, racist controls and criminalisation in migrant neighbourhoods, which are branded as problem districts; the wrong family name is enough to end up on police suspect lists – or even to be deported, if it is the wish of Federal Interior Minister Faeser. Politicians in Berlin, North Rhine-Westphalia and elsewhere are making a name for themselves with zero-tolerance strategies that cover the living spaces of migrant communities with repression in a publicity-effective way – and thus bear a share of the responsibility for racist murders like the one in Hanau. While those affected by the measures are accused of having no respect for the rule of law, basic rights and principles of the rule of law are thrown overboard in the course of combating them.
The book: „GENERALVERDACHT. Wie mit dem Myth Clanriminalität Politik gemacht wird“ (How politics is made with the myth of clan crime) takes a critical stock of the clan debate from criminological, jurisprudential, sociological and feminist perspectives for the first time: Who is meant when clans are mentioned? What is the tradition of criminalisation strategies in dealing with migration in Germany? Which orientalist stereotypes are at work in the clan debate, and what consequences does the stigmatisation have for the people concerned?
