6 p.m. – A Journey with the Oud: Mohannad Nasser Quintett.
His musical vision is based on traditional Arabic music. Mohannad’s journey with the oud stemmed from his rich studies at the Higher Institute of Music in Damascus, where he perfected his knowledge in traditional Middle Eastern music and explored Western classical music. At Berklee College, he completed his master’s degree.
During his career, he was able to expand oud skills by adapting them to different musical styles, such as classical music, jazz music, Brazilian music or flamenco.
In 2015, Mohannad – like most Syrian artists – faced a harsh and daily danger due to the conflict in Syria. He therefore moved to Lebanon to become a music educator. He was trained by several international organizations that offered music lessons to refugee children. This inspiring experience inspired him to encourage the next generation of musicians to find their voices.
In 2017, Mohannad released his Oumi Ensemble’s first album „Imaginary Dance“ and launched his solo project „L’Oud Whispers“. Mohannadreceived several awards in international oud competitions and performs his music all over the world.

7 pm – With cult status: Ata Canani & Karaba.
Ozan Ata Canani was born Mehmet Kösger in Turkey in 1963. He came to Germany at the age of 12 and was soon considered a child prodigy on the Bağlama, the long-necked saz that shaped Turkish music. At the end of the 70s, the youthful Ata rather accidentally invents the Turkish rock’n’roll of German tongue – for the singer-songwriter a way to make his stirring protest songs heard by audiences who do not speak Turkish. The release of the influential sampler „Songs of Gastarbeiter“ on the Munich-based label Trikont in 2014 catapulted the singer into the consciousness of a public interested in music. Ata Canani’s „“Deutsche Freunde“ is perhaps the most impressive song on the album curated by Imran Ayata and Bülent Kullukcu.
But it takes another seven years for Ozan Ata Canani to present „Warte mein Land, warte“, his official debut album in May 2021 on Fun in the church / Staatsakt – under massive media interest.
Karaba are an instrumental neo-prog and jazz rock band from Munich and the environment of the ever-rejuvenating Embryo: the members are Andreas Kainz (keyboards), Marcel „Maasl“ Maier (bass), Louis Bankavs (guitar) and Jakob Thun (drums). They gain international attention in 2019 with the track „Der Inder“ on the compilation „Kraut Jazz Futurism“ by Mathias Modica.
In May 2021, the Münchner Kammerspiele produce a collaborative online concert by Ozan Ata Canani and Karaba. Since then, the two have been touring together – and can also be heard together on the seven-inch single „Vom Bosphorus bis zum Rhein,“ released on the anniversary of the racist murders in Hanau.
In 2022, Ata Canani is one of the „stars“ of the film „Aşk, Mark ve Ölüm“ (Love, D-Mark and Death) by Cem Kaya about Turkish immigration to Germany, and the music that produced it, which won an audience award at the Berlinale. His unusual life journey is also the subject of the new ARD documentary series #unterAlmans.

20:00 – Master of the Bouzouki: Nikos Chassirtzis & Band.
Nikos Chassirtzis is a musician, music teacher and certified instrument maker.  He is able to play his stringed instruments like Jimi Hendrix and consequently cuts a fine figure not only in the chamber music hall of the Philharmonie, but also as the presumably first bouzouki interpreter at the world’s biggest heavy metal event, the Wacken Open Air.
Nikos was born and raised in Iraklia, a village of 10,000 inhabitants not far from the border with Bulgaria on the northern Greek mainland. Music was omnipresent in Nikos‘ childhood home. In addition to its fairy-tale landscape, the region is also famous for its many instrument-making workshops. In particular, the Zuma is made here, a funnel oboe originally from India and now popular from North Africa through the Middle East to Central and East Asia. Niko’s first teacher, the conductor of the State Orchestra Dimitrios Chinzos, introduced him to the basics of Oriental harmony teachers and maqam, the characteristics of Greek Oriental folk music, on the zurna.
Niko’s grandfather, who had lived in Germany as a guest worker since the 1960s, was also a zurna player. In 1987, Niko’s family followed him to Germany. Already in the early 90’s Nikos started to fuse traditional Greek music with popular music from other cultural backgrounds, classical, pop and jazz. In particular, improvisation, which is common in Greek folklore, proved to be an intersection and fruitful source of inspiration. In addition, Nikos Chassirtzis is part of the band Fanfara Kalashnikov.
