Often, as FLINTA* with an Asian migration background, we face the challenge of not being able to find words for our intense emotional feelings. In the concept of „somatic voice“, where language is missing and we reach our inner self directly through the voice, we encourage to let everything that has not found sufficient expression sound into a new form. In the process, vocal and musical rituals emerge that embrace us and our experiences.

For (preferably) FLINTA* with Asian migration background, max. 10 people.

Pre-registration via this link is required.

Ikua Shim (she/her) is a singer, composer and practicing music therapist. In 2023 she completed her training in Ursang (Somatic Voice Work), under the teaching of Martin van Emmichoven. She is expected to receive her master’s degree in music therapy at the UdK Berlin in spring 2024, dedicating her master’s thesis to the topic of ‚Intercultural Music Therapy‘.

This workshop is a part of the Asian + Queer Festival, organized by Metoo Asians e.V.

Metoo Asians e.V. is a non-profit organization that aims to support Asian women* who experienced sexual violence or harassment in Berlin. We organise various community events as well to have our own safe place to empower and enhance solidarity. (* stands for all people, who identify as women). The members of Metoo Asians e.V. are queer Asians and also their allies with the first migration background. If you’re interested in what we do, check out our website https://metooasians.com/ (in Korean language) or our Instagram in English (@metoo_asians).

The Asian + Queer Festival will not only provide a space for sharing, networking and empowerment, but will also let the participants go out of their comfort zone and reflect on their identity and their privilege. Both during and after the event, participants will carry this sense of empowerment into the world around them. Also, confronting one’s own prejudices, stereotypes, and racisms usually has a long-term effect on the participants‘ ways of acting and represents a positive contribution to togetherness. The topics of the workshop include „Being Asian“ as well as „Being Queer“.
