June 1967 marks a pivotal moment, not only for the Iranian diaspora but also for Berlin’s collective history. The Shah’s state visit and the assassination of Benno Ohnesorg tied together the histories of social movements in Iran and Germany in a mutual transnational entanglement. In this second session, we will focus on the shared history of these social movements and examine the organization of the student movement in the shadow of the SAVAK secret police and the structures of the Confederation of Iranian Students (CISNU). How did their radical democratic practices counteract the Shah’s dictatorship? We will look at the continuities and ruptures that span the decades to the present day, and explore the relevance of these early experiments for today’s diaspora.
