New Year’s Eve 2022/23: Berlin is on fire, cars are up in flames, young men are rioting several nights in a row. There’s always the same set of explanations, either blaming everything on the ethnic background of the rioters, or putting the most atrocious crimes into perspective as “social issues”.
And while it has turned out that there had been riots throughout Germany, the image of the “Muslim ghetto Neukölln” was reinforced and used as recurring topic in the recent Berlin election campaigns, too. So what is at the root of this violence? And where do the stereotypical reflexes of the media come from?
