Emeralds (Reunion Tour) • Nick Klein
Emeralds sind John Elliott, Steve Hauschildt und Mark McGuire. Sie begannen 2005 in den Vororten von Cleveland, gemeinsam Musik zu machen. Ihre bisher erfolgreichsten Alben sind Does It Look Like I’m Here? und Solar Bridge. Ersteres wurde 2010 vom ikonischen Label Editions Mego veröffentlicht, für das John Elliott das Sublabel Spektrum Spools kuratiert. Die LP Solar Bridge wurde ursprünglich auf Aaron Dilloways (Wolf Eyes, etc.) Hanson-Imprint veröffentlicht und ist gerade neu gemastert vom Label Ghostly International wiederveröffentlicht worden! Zu diesem Anlass sind Emeralds zum ersten Mal nach einem Jahrzehnt wieder auf Tour – für drei exklusive Shows, wovon eine am 07. November in der Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz stattfindet.
Das außerordentlich produktive Trio Emeralds hat eine unzählige Anzahl von Tapes und CDRs in kleiner Auflage auf einer Vielzahl von Labels veröffentlicht. Mark McGuire und Steve Hauschildt verwenden ihre eigenen Namen auch auf der Bühne, während John Elliott als Outer Space auftritt und unter den Pseudonymen Imaginary Softwoods, Colored Mushroom und the Medicine Rocks aufnimmt.
Does It Look Like I’m Here? führte Emeralds von experimenteller, kosmischer Musik in eine radikal neue Richtung ‒ weg von längeren Jams, hin zu kürzerem Material. Außerdem wechselte die Gruppe von analogen Synthesizern zu einem analog-digitalen Hybrid-Setup, das auch eine Menge Gitarrensynthesizer enthält. Ihre Musik zeigt deutlich den Einfluss von frühen Synthesizer-Pionieren wie Grosskopf und Howarth, ist aber grundsätzlich eigenständig und unverkennbar.
Nick Klein is an artist working in sound and art and sometimes (begrudgingly) sound art with a lean towards the social potential in those modalities as they interact. Klein has recorded a large amount of music for tape, CD, digital file, and vinyl editions for music labels around the world, as well as running his own amorphous label project PL (primitive languages, Psychic Liberation, etc). Concurrently, to the best of his ability, he has shown work in visual art contexts. Klein is uninterested in the prohibitive ideological tropes and circumstances that both contexts offer, and focuses the intent of his work on trying to see what productive energy comes from the friction between the two. Klein likes loud volume, cooking, offline community building, records, bars, synthesizers, and comedy.
Klein is currently located in Berlin. Klein has operated a monthly radio show on Montez Press Radio since its inception and is spending 2023-2024 developing a monthly invitational program at the Volksbühne Roter Salon with collaborator Hugo Esquinca. Klein’s vessel for his projects in New York City is through SARA’S, while also collaborating on the text and recorded media edition format with curator Sara Blazej for the space.
