Giulio Bursi

Giulio Bursi is Film Kurator of the Volksbühne Berlin. With a background in film theory and filmmaking, he completed his studies in Cinema and Performing Arts at the University of Bologna in 2005 and obtained an international PhD in Film Studies from the University of Udine/Université Paris III in 2009.

As independent curator he organised exhibitions, performances and retrospectives for institutions including the Tate Modern, MoMA (NY), Centre Pompidou (Paris), Austrian Film Museum, GAM (Turin), and 56th Venice Biennale (Padiglione Italia), co-curating large-scale exhibition projects including Black Matters (ZKM, Karlsruhe, 2017) and Models, Open Letters, Prototypes, Supplements (Triennale di Milano, 2017).

As film programmer he collaborated with international film festivals like Turin Film Festival, Il Cinema Ritrovato (Bologna), I Mille Occhi (Trieste), Film Forum (Udine), FilmMaker (Milano), Festival du Nouveau Cinéma (Montreal), To Save and Project (NY).

In 2012 he co-founded Atelier Impopulaire, an independent artists’ collaborative project in the field of exhibition making, publication and time-based media production, collaborating among others with artists like Morgan Fisher, Christopher Williams, Jean-Marie Straub, Alexander Kluge, Experimental Jetset, Aldo Tambellini, Peter Tscherkassky, Sandra Gibson & Luis Recoder, Bruce McClure, Lorna Boschman, Andrea Belfi, Dries Van Noten and Margaret Honda.

Between 2001 and 2011 he worked as assistant of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, directing J’écoute! a film about Ces rencontres avec eux (Quei Loro Incontri, 2006).

As film critic he wrote for different international film and art magazines among others Mousse Magazine, Cinema & Cie, Hors Champ, Filmcritica, Cineforum and Bianco e Nero, editing books like Film Canon (2011), Film Style (2007) What Burns (never) Returns (2010) and Cinema Elettrico (2011).

He is adjunct professor of Expanded Cinema at the IULM University (Milan).
