Literature in the Volksbühne in June 2019

The Volksbühne is presenting the following literary and discussion events in the Roter Salon in June.

Holger Brüns: Vierzehn Tage - Sommernovelle
Book release with surprise guests
Saturday, 01.06.2019, 20:00
Volksbühne Roter Salon
8 / conc. 5 €

Vierzehn Tage (Fourteen Days) tells of a melancholic episode in the life of a Berliner in his mid-40s, in which the sun always shines, the sky is always clear and blue, and life isn't easy. He works for the post office, has two weeks free and doesn't know what to do with himself. So he drifts around, meets up with acquaintances, drives out to the country for a few days and begins an affair with a younger Spanish man. His faithful travel companions are his memories of times gone by: of the West Berlin of the 80s, old ideals and struggles, a youth which is now behind him. Holger Brüns devotes himself to the questions of ageing, big and small: what became of the life that I once dreamed of? What happens to me while the world changes around me? Why is all that so boring? Is that all there is? And will I ever fix up my kitchen? More information

Bodo Mrozek: Jugend - Pop - Kultur. Eine transnationale Geschichte
Book release
Tuesday, 04.06.2019, 20:00
Volksbühne Roter Salon
8 / conc. 5 €

Crashing noises, rude behaviour and shrill fashion: the vocabulary that was used to describe the new youth culture in the middle of the 20th century marked a cultural shift. Aesthetic conflict culminated in street fights, police actions and censorship laws. At the same time, concert tours, pirate stations and fan clubs established new, boundary-defying content. Bodo Mrozek analyses the transformation that took place in the 50s and 60s and shaped society. That which was originally condemned as juvenile delinquency became the epitome of urban society ten years later. Documents from six countries make up the substance of this transnational history of pop culture. Mrozek is a historian and currently a fellow at the Berlin Center for Cold War Studies from the Institute of Contemporary History Munich – Berlin (IfZ), Federal Foundation for the Study of Communist Dictatorship in East Germany and the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. „Sag was!“ Framing bei Gesprächen im Alltag
An event from Tadel verpflichtet! e.V. and Kleiner Fünf
Wednesday, 05.06.2019, 20:00
Volksbühne Roter Salon
8 / conc. 5 €

„You cannot not frame!“ - in recent months the term “framing” has become part of the standard political vocabulary. According to the political right in particular, framing is manipulation. The fact that right-wing populists have themselves successfully framed many debates – is another kettle of fish apparently.

But should it be? Shouldn't the reaction to all this be to put more value on deliberately framing? And do the same conditions apply to a conversation with your uncle at a family gathering as a debate with Alice Weidel in a talk show? How important is language for the development of political opinions? Does it help to sometimes make the terms themselves topics of conversation in order to conduct better discussions in everyday life? Or do such discussions about language only dig the trenches deeper?

These questions are discussed by Anne Wizorek, Johannes Hillje and Philipp Steffan. But the conversation won't be limited to the stage. With the help of a variety of participatory formats, the audience is explicitly invited to take part in the discussion and contribute example situations. More information

Janina Findeisen:
Mein Zimmer im Haus des Krieges. 351 Tage gefangen in Syrien
Host: Christoph Dreyer (Reporters without Borders)
Friday, 07.06.2019, 20:00
Volksbühne Roter Salon

What is friendship really worth during war? Journalist Janina Findeisen was kidnapped while on a research trip in Syria in 2015, and held captive for a total of 351 days. She went to Syria to meet with her childhood friend who had converted to Islam, and to understand how her radicalisation had happened. Shortly after their meeting, she was kidnapped. She then spent almost a year in different places, locked in various rooms, guarded by armed men. In one of those rooms she gave birth to her child. He book tells of 351 days in war, of survival in solitary confinement, the first months with her child and finally her rescue. A story about hope, resistance and love, friendship and betrayal and the cruel logic of war. More information

"Berlin, Alter". Notes of the Metropolis with Joab Nist of Notes of Berlin and Sebastian Lehmann
Tuesday, 11.06.2019, 20:00
Volksbühne Roter Salon
8 / conc. 5 €

Berlin writes the best stories. All you have to do is look and listen very closely. Joab Nist does the looking. He collects the oddest and most entertaining slips, notes and messages that the people of this city leave behind every day and publishes them on his blog Notes of Berlin. Sebastian Lehmann, on the other hand, listens. He transcribes what he hears and turns it into stories that he reads at his Lesebühne stages or on radioeins. For this joint programme they're presenting the “finest” stories and messages that the city has to offer. Reading, PowerPoint presentation, talk. And whatever else occurs to them. More information

Vergessene Arbeitskämpfe – Ein Punk-Abend
Featuring: The Incredible Herrengedeck & Killer Jiller
Wednesday, 12.06.2019, 22:00
Volksbühne Roter Salon
8 / conc. 5 €

Punk must return to the Volksbühne and the struggles of workers must return to a workers’ theatre. In recent years, many places that punk bands could perform at in the middle of Berlin have disappeared. A group of five Volksbühne stagehands, with the support of many other colleagues at the theatre, are presenting a punk concert (2 bands, 1 DJ) every two months, commemorating a labour conflict – from the past or the present – over the course of each concert: in June it’s the British miners’ strike. Bands: The Incredible Herrengedeck and Killer Jiller. More information
