Monday, 08.04.2019, 19:30
Volksbühne main stage

Christoph Hein celebrates his 75th birthday on 8 April. The chronicler of East-West German circumstances reads from his new books Gegenlauschangriff (Counter Eavesdropping) and Alles, was du brauchst – Die 20 wichtigsten Dinge im Leben (Everything You Need: The 20 Most Important Things in Life). Wenzel listens and considers which song he should sing afterwards: one adapted from Christoph Hein or one by Wenzel or by Theodor Kramer? With the piano? The accordion? The guitar? In short: songs and text in conversation. More information

Ece Temelkuran: Wenn dein Land nicht mehr dein Land ist oder Sieben Schritte in die Diktatur (English version title: How to Lose a Country: The 7 Steps from Democracy to Dictatorship)
Book release
Host: Dilek Güngör, reading of the German version: Irene Baumann
Monday, 01.04.2019, 20:00
Volksbühne Roter Salon
8 / conc. 5 €

One morning you wake up and ask yourself if this country, where you have always felt at home, where you've always dutifully cast your vote, and that – despite all the criticism! – you call your homeland, is still your country. That morning can be the morning after the coup in Turkey, after the Brexit referendum or after a European election that sets new records for right-wing populists: Instead of falling into a state of political shock, resorting to questioning the evil in human nature or retreating into an inner exile, according to Ece Temelkuran's urgent appeal we must face the danger head on. An effective opposition to the populist zeitgeist and a defence of democracy require an international debate to which everyone can contribute.

Ece Temelkuran, born 1973 in Izmir, is a lawyer, writer and journalist. Because of her oppositional views and criticism of the ruling party, she lost her job at one of Turkey's major daily newspapers. More information

Music sociologist Prof. Dr. Brigitte Emmersdorfer (Vienna) and journalist and host of various discussion formats Hendrik van den Grachten (Amsterdam) are unified by their long-term and continual search for the manifestation of the fetish character in music, connected with their respective ways of decrypting and forms of experience. Peng Peng Parker
With: Nora Gomringer & Philipp Scholz
Concert
Friday, 05.04.2019, 20:00
Volksbühne Roter Salon
10 / conc. 7 €

Dorothy Parker was a many-layered woman: poet, lover, advertising copywriter and Oscar nominee. Her lyrical work is funny and laconic, at times tender, at times hard. No one has written with such sighs and laughs about love and the jockeying between the sexes as Dorothy Parker. Gomringer & Scholz, have created amazing songs out of the abundance of Parker's mocking, humorous and love poems for colleagues, dogs and men. Melodious and rhythmic, funny and unique, the duo softens the black and white of old photos and tinkling piano keys into the melodies that have long lingered between the lines. More information

David Goeßmann: Die Erfindung der bedrohten Republik
Host: Dr. Irmtraud Gutschke
Book release
Thursday, 11.04.2019, 20:00
Volksbühne Roter Salon
8 / conc. 5 €

Over and over again, threats are orchestrated and utilised to push through unpopular policies. Since the New Year's Eve attacks in Cologne at the very latest, the federal government, parliament and mass media in Germany have declared that those seeking protection, the victims of war and displacement are dangerous - and the Germans are the ones that must be protected. In Die Erfindung der bedrohten Republik (Inventing the Threatened Republic), David Goeßmann goes into great detail about the calculations behind politics' and mass media's favourite bogeyman and about how incorrectly and irresponsibly they acted and continue to act. Kabeljau & Talk: Die literarische Game-Show
Hosts: Victor Kümel & Chris Möller
Guest: Stefanie de Velasco
Friday, 12.04.2019, 20:00
Volksbühne Roter Salon
8 / conc. 5 €

Inspired by US late-night shows, Kabeljau & Talk is a format that takes the pace, humour and playful nature of these programmes and transposes them onto a literary event. At the heart of the evening is a manuscript that an author is currently working on, which is then discussed on stage with two experts. As everyday experts, they go beyond the world of novels. They work in nightclubs, refugee centres or the UN, and therefore approach these texts with fundamentally different questions. This meeting of minds in conversations, book readings and literary adaptations of game-show-formats, allows for surprising changes in perspective on tomorrow’s novels.

In the first edition of 2019, Stefanie de Velasco is our guest for a discussion of her current novel draft and the dangerous appeal of sects. More information

Forgotten Workers' Struggles – A Punk Evening
With Bensley: & Zerfall
Thursday, 25.04.19, 22:00
Volksbühne Roter Salon
8 / conc. 5 €

Punk must return to the Volksbühne and the struggles of workers must return to a workers' theatre. In recent years, many places that punk bands could perform at in the middle of Berlin have disappeared. A group of five Volksbühne stagehands, with the support of many other colleagues at the theatre, are presenting a punk concert (2 bands, 1 DJ) every two months, commemorating a labour conflict – from the past or the present – over the course of each concert: in April it’s the strike against Tex-Son in San Antonio from 1959-1963. Bands: Bensley: & the GDR punk band Zerfall, founded in 1983. More information

Thorsten Becker: ME FIRST.
Staged Reading with Carmen-Maja and Jennipher Antoni
Friday, 26.04.2019, 20:00
Volksbühne Roter Salon
8 / conc. 5 €

Thorsten Becker has conjured up a quirky contribution to the #MeToo debate. Yes, one could even say that his mother-daughter play ME FIRST, finally gives debate status back to the hashtag that's degenerated into a denunciation campaign. Have we entered into a new era of the battle of the sexes? Is humanity on the way to putting on trial the natural world that brings us into this world as either women or men without asking us? Can we destroy the dictatorship of nature that forces us into constant reproduction? Has the ideal of eliminating the differences between the sexes drifted within our reach? More information
