100 Years of Bauhaus - A farewell party with grand funeral concert in June at the Volksbühne

Bauhaus – ein rettendes Requiem (c) dataholic / Tobias Steinert

The 16th of January marks the official beginning of the Bauhaus year. And 100 years after its founding, the Bauhaus is allegedly alive and everyone is working on updating it. In today’s pervasive abundance of design, however, perhaps its absence would be a moment of liberation. It’s time to bid farewell to the Bauhaus in order to be able to meet the challenges of today in an impartial way. And that’s what we’re aiming to accomplish with both a world premiere (20 June) and an evening programme of lectures and discussions (29 May) presented at the Volksbühne together with the initiative projekt bauhaus. Mark your calendars now!

Director and musician Schorsch Kamerun is staging the world premiere of Das Bauhaus – ein rettendes Requiem (The Bauhaus – a Redemptive Requiem, working title) together with over 25 actors, musicians, singers and dancers on the main stage of the Volksbühne. Right in the middle of the centenary, it’s going to be a combative farewell party in the form of a grand funeral concert. Is the radiant Bauhaus inventiveness still alive, or has it long since mutated into an omnipresent yet zombified museum that’s being ridden to death? The fiercest update of the great Bauhaus accepts its temporary suspension in order to protect itself against general ossification.

Three weeks before the premiere, the Volksbühne and projekt bauhaus present an evening of lectures and discussions in the Grüner Salon under the title Ciao Bauhaus! Academics, architects, designers and artists pose the question: what have the decades of “updating” the Bauhaus idea de facto achieved? Has it been the source of central impulses in the recent past? What’s the end result of understanding and utilising every historical legacy as a resource for the present? Is the Bauhaus idea really still alive?

The five-year-long initiative projekt bauhaus was founded in Berlin in 2015, in order to conduct a lively and open debate on the relevance of the Bauhaus. A critical inventory of Bauhaus ideas has been conducted through discussion events, cooperative workshops and artistic design experiments. The results are being documented in special issues of the architecture and urbanism magazine Arch+. The initiative is run by a team of artistic directors including Jesko Fezer, Christian Hiller, Anh-Linh Ngo, Philipp Oswalt, Joanne Pouzenc and Jan Wenzel.

projekt bauhaus is supported by ARCH+ Verein zur Förderung des Architektur- und Stadtdiskurses e.V. Additional support from the Federal Cultural Foundation’s Bauhaus TodayFund as well as the Federal Agency for Civic Education and the Schering Stiftung.
