Literature in October in the Volksbühne

The Volksbühne is proud to present the following literary events on the main stage and in the Roter Salon in October:

The Sound of Science
Launch of Hinter den Dingen, a research podcast
Monday, 1 October 2018, 20:00
Volksbühne Roter Salon
Free admission

The new podcast series Hinter den Dingen (Behind Things) - produced by the "Episteme in Bewegung" research group at the FU Berlin - hovers in between feature, science portrait and radio play. In a playful and entertaining way, it uses museum objects as the starting point for acoustic journeys into premodern history. None of the stories it tells are the same. Each episode weaves different narratives and adopts a manner of narration according to each particular object, and based on the specialist viewpoint of each of the academics whose research we come to know throughout the podcast. The first episode “The great promise of the ruby red teapot” takes us to the early modern Pfaueninsel (Peacock Island) near Berlin. The secrets kept there can be discovered in our listening lounge. Headphones will be issued.

Alexander Rahr: 2054 - Putin decodiert
Book launch and conversation
Reading: Haralampi Oroschakoff
Presented by Alexander Neu (Member of Parliament)
Thursday, 4 October 2018, 20:00
Volksbühne Roter Salon
8 / 5 €

Alexander Rahr is Germany’s leading Russia expert – now he’s packed his knowledge into a engrossing political thriller. Vladimir Putin’s power demands admiration from some, and triggers suspicion and fear in others. What makes the president so successful? Does he know things that other heads of government don’t? This question is the starting point for Rahr to weave his plot around politicians and secret services, the prophecies of Nostradamus and three generations of Russian expatriates, chasing after an aeroplane from the future. Much of what Rahr has learnt in the backrooms of power must officially be kept to himself. Yet in this literary labyrinth he can reveal many a secret and lay bare the hidden structures of Russian and international politics. More Info

Willi Jasper: Der gläserne Sarg - Erinnerungen an 1968 und die deutsche ‚Kulturrevolution‘
Alan Posener in conversation with the author
Friday, 5 October 2018, 20:00
Volksbühne Roter Salon
8 / 5 €

What we refer to as “1968” was a fundamental cultural revolution that began, at the latest, on 2 June 1967 with the shooting of Benno Ohnesorgs, and only ended in the late 70s with the dissolution of the K-groups and the founding of the Green party. In his very personal account, Willi Jasper, a protagonist in the movement for ten years as a Maoist KPD/AO official, looks back on a time of social change in which Paul Celan’s and Theodor W. Adorno’s writings united with proletkult and working-class romanticism, and happenings and militancy merged into unrest in factories and federal election results of less than one percent. And so, questions from the present are not only posed to the past, but questions of the past are also posed to the future. More Info

Macht zur Frage (The Power to Question)
Concert with the Black-Red Bolshevik health spa orchestra, stories by Ahne, music by Nino Sandow and ‘Ihr Wichser’ (‘You Wankers’)
Sunday, 7 October 2018, 19:00
Volksbühne main stage
12 / 8 €

Founded in 1986 in East Berlin as a political intervention orchestra, the Black-Red Bolshevik health spa orchestra survived Erich Honecker. And Helmut Kohl. This Bolshevik health spa orchestra has no manager. They’re not professionals, but a music-making family instead. They play for the love of it! What they definitely can do, with their politically charged music, is pose questions. Provocative, subliminal, unsure of the answers themselves. Those who hear and see the show, can dance, riot, cry, laugh. This brass band plays classics of the modern era and modern classics, gentle and hard, political and danceable. Of course everything is played live, all the songs have been crafted and rehearsed – on the street, on concert stages big and small, and in the theatre. Macht zur Frage (The Power to Question) is the result of 32 years of band history. More Info

Florian Werner in conversation with the author
Thursday, 18 October 2018, 20:00

Shy Greer Kadetzky hasn’t been at college for long when she meets the woman who will change her life forever: Faith Frank. The charismatic 63-year-old is a key figure in the women’s movement. As the founder of a feminist newspaper and successful author, she is everything Greer wants to be: quick-witted, unabashed and militant. As much as she loves her boyfriend Corey, she is fraught with an inexplicable longing. Her encounter with Frank awakens something in her and she asks herself the essential questions: who am I, and who do I want to be? Years later, Greer has finished her degree and the unimaginable happens: Faith invites her to an interview in New York – and hereby leads Greer down the most adventurous path of her life: a twisted, at times rocky path, that is, ultimately, the path to herself. His goal was to photograph simply and honestly. His photos were created from the speed of an instant and from the truth of the moment. He was known as the wildest of Germany’s photographer-artists who changed photography in the 90s. He became famous in 1994, when he took pictures of teenage nightlife for an advertising campaign for MTV. He labelled them “egotist”, “slob”, “bastard” and “consumerist brat”. And thus was born a singular generational portrait. Daniel Josefsohn, born in Hamburg to Jewish parents, one of the first skaters in Germany, was always familiar with extremes. And he seemed invincible. Until his stroke in 2012 – he died from its effects at the age of 54. In this documentary, his companions, including actress Julia Hummer, photographer Wolfgang Tillmanns and comedian Oliver Polak, recall a wild bloke, a difficult character and a big-hearted person. Passagen Gespräch
Hélène Cixous and Peter Engelmann
Tuesday, 30 October 2018, 20:00
Volksbühne main stage
12 / 8 €

The French writer and philosopher Hélène Cixous ranks among the great pioneers of feminism and is the founder of an éctriture féminine. Since her childhood, as the daughter of Jewish parents in colonial Algeria, she’s gained a familiarity with the mechanisms of social and political violence. At the intersection of manifold linguistic, cultural and sexual identities, her writing subverts patriarchal structures and transcends the limits of entrenched orders in a playful and poetic manner. Publisher and philosopher Peter Engelmann speaks with Cixous about her political engagement, contemporary feminism and the emancipatory potential of writing. More Info

Kabeljau & Talk - Die literarische Game-Show
With: Malte Abraham, Chris Möller and Paul Brodowsky
Wednesday, 31 October 2018, 20:00
Volksbühne Roter Salon
8 / 5 €

Inspired by US late-night shows, Kabeljau & Talk is a format that combines the pace, humor and playful nature of these programmes and transfers them onto a literary event. At the heart of the evening is a manuscript that an author is currently working on, which is then discussed on stage with two experts. As everyday experts, they escape the world of novels. They work in nightclubs, refugee centres or the UN, and therefore approach these texts with fundamentally different questions. This meeting of minds in conversations, book readings and literary game-show-formats, allows for a surprising change of perspective on tomorrow’s novels. In the October edition, we speak with author Paul Brodowsky about fatherhood and toxic masculinity. With the help of a genealogist, we embark on a search for hidden family secrets. More Info
