The Volksbühne Berlin’s new 2018/2019 season begins on 24 August with two Berlin debuts as part of the Tanz im August festival, followed by a world premiere to open the season on 12 September. The complete programme for August and September, with information on all events, is available for download here.

With Die sechs Brandenburgischen Konzerte, Belgian choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, her Rosas company and the B’Rock Orchestra, conducted by Amandine Beyer, engage with Johann Sebastian Bach’s probably most popular non-religious work, the Brandenburg Concertos. Each of these concerts is an experiment. De Keersmaeker interlaces choreography and music, as if Bach’s work were a ready-made score for a dance piece, embodying his polyphonic mastery. Supported by the Federal Cultural Foundation. World premiere on 12 September.

Playwright Mohammad Al Attar and director Omar Abusaada present their new play The Factory, about a cement factory opened by a French corporation in northern Syria in 2010. With a group of Syrian actors, they deconstruct one of the most disturbing aspects of the war: the alliance between money and power. Arabic and French with German and English surtitles. A co-production with the Ruhrtriennale, Berlin debut on 27 September.

As part of its 30th anniversary edition, the Tanz im August festival presents two Berlin debuts at the Volksbühne: the co-production Private Song by Alexandra Bachzetsis (from 24 August), as well as the guest performance Neues Stück II by Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch and Alan Lucien Øyen (from 31 August).

Also on the main stage: the book release of Verwirrnis by Christoph Hein; „Das ist Netzpolitik!“ conference, organised by netzpolitik.org; Best of Poetry Slam; as well as concerts from Jonathan Wilson and Iranian singer Sevdaliza.

The 3. Stock and Roter Salon venues are hosting events including: Madame Poverty. A set of emotion and sensation by Marius Schötz, a thesis performance in co-production with the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts; the P14-plays Leiden ohne Liebe and Ich steh schon derbe lang auf dich; the discourse events Syria’s war economy and reconstruction by and with Mohammad Al Attar, as well as the continuation of the Facetime and Armen Avanessian & Enemies series.

Tickets for all September events may be purchased beginning on 2 July online via www.volksbuehne.berlin, at the Volksbühne box office and over the phone at +49 (0) 30 2406 5777. Please note that the Volksbühne is closed for the summer holiday from 8 July to 22 August, so tickets can only be purchased online during that period.
