Gisèle Vienne presents the German debut of CROWD at the Volksbühne

French-Austrian director, choreographer and artist Gisèle Vienne presents her latest work for the stage, CROWD, for the first time in Germany on 13-15 June at the Volksbühne, and you are cordially invited.

The setting is Europe, we are in the 21st century. A group of 15 young people arrange to meet for a rave. A DJ set composed and edited by Peter Rehberg and Stephen O’Malley, video montages and the lighting design deliver the pulse for a virtuosic choreographic thrill. The ravers’ rituals, gestures and excesses turn into a play between retouched movements and distortions in time.

Gisèle Vienne, born in 1976, has been working as a director and choreographer since 1999. She often collaborates with writer Dennis Cooper and has, with her disturbing visual worlds, developed her own, unique theatrical language that consistently tells of the ambivalence of the beautiful and the uncanny, most recently in The Pyre (Centre Pompidou Paris, 2013), and The Ventriloquists Convention (Puppentheater Halle, 2015). In CROWD Gisèle Vienne mines her own experiences in the early 90s, when she plunged into the theatre and club scenes while going to school in Berlin. Peter Rehberg, musician and founder of the Editions Mego label, and Stephen O´Malley, head of the drone-band Sunn O))), take up these motifs in their music selection and mix, featuring tracks by artists such as Jeff Mills, Underground Resistance and Drexciya, who’ve shaped the sound in many Berlin clubs.
