April Concerts in the Volksbühne and Roter Salon: Tony, Caro & John, Jamie Stewar (Xiu Xiu), Federico Albanese, Prada Meinhoff, Baby Dee & Alex Neilson

The Volksbühne Berlin is proud to present the following concerts in April:

Tony, Caro & John
Saturday, 7 April 2018, 8 pm
Volksbühne Roter Salon
14 €

Preserved sometime in the 70s, stored on master tapes over the years and occasionally brought back into the public eye through a couple of select reissues, Tony, Caro & John’s album All on the First Day remains one of the best kept secrets of the 70s psych-folk movement. Whilst contemporaries such as The Incredible Strong Band, The Pentangle and Pearls Before Swine were garnering international acclaim and spreading their versions of British folk music across the world, the world of Tony, Caro & John was restricted to small theatres, DIY-venues and living rooms in the depths of London. Over the years a cult following developed around the band and their only album, which they recorded, produced and released by themselves in 1972. Copies were sold for enormous sums and Beach House put their version of Tony, Caro & John’s “Snowdon Song”, under the title “Lovelier Girl”, at the centre of their self-titled debut. Amongst ballads, songs of protest and experimental storytelling, Tony & Caro’s lyrics navigate through a psychedelic mix of guitar, bass, harmonium, violin, electronic gimmicks and sparse drums. Now the band is finally on tour again with their recent reissue of All On the First Day on Tapete Records.

Jamie Stewart (Xiu Xiu)
Saturday, 14 April 2018, 8 pm
Volksbühne Roter Salon
15 €

Electronic, pop and experimental are a few of the many attributes that could be used to describe Xiu Xiu’s broad sound palette over the past 16 years. The project has developed and reinvented itself from album to album. With each new concept, he also often changed out musicians. The only constant is band leader and co-founder Jamie Stewart, whose voice always fluctuates between strong and fragile and gives his songs a unique note right before they collapse. Whilst Xiu Xiu released and toured their tenth studio album Forever over the past year, Stewart will begin his solo tour this spring. He thereby strips the repertoire, usually carried by intense percussion and programmed beats, down to the guitar and voice at its fragile core.

Federico Albanese
Wednesday, 18 April 2018, 8 pm
DJ beginning at 7 pm in the Parkettcafé: Falko Teichmann
Volksbühne Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz main stage
22 € / 18 € (concessions)

The first sounds and frequencies you're met with when listening to Federico Albanese’s third solo album, By the Deep Sea, are celestial and dense. The sounds of the sea situate themselves, in a suitably programmatic manner, beneath a soundscape that appears to reach almost as deep as the ocean. Albanese is a master of melancholy who embeds cinematic compositions and airy arrangements into his playing. He serves this with arpeggios accompanied by strings and meticulously measured out rhythms. In addition to working with a grand piano, he employed a Rhodes piano, synthesizers, a Hammond organ, electric, acoustic and bass guitars as well as field recordings.

The journey to the album he just released on Neue Meister took the Milan-born composer from early guitar and clarinet classes, through his adolescence with forays into diverse rock bands, double bass studies and work on various film sets, to Berlin. His deep understanding of the connection between image and sound and the broad spectrum of musical finesse from folk to electronica to classical music, has not only manifested itself in his music – be it as a solo artist or in the avant-garde duo La Blanche Alchimie with Jessica Einaudi -- but also in soundtrack composition for documentaries, series and films.

Prada Meinhoff
Album Release Concert + Party
Wednesday, 18 April 2018, 8 pm
Volksbühne Roter Salon
10 €

The Berlin-based electro-punk-duo PRADA MEINHOFF celebrates the release of their eponymous debut album on Freudenhaus Recordings with an exclusive release concert. Vocals, bass and beats – they need nothing else. Their live shows are ecstatic – euphoria and destruction at the same time. Following tours with DAF, Peaches, Fischer-Z and MIA, PRADA MEINHOFF are the new, great hope for a genre that doesn't exist yet in this form.

Made up of René Riewer and Christin Nichols, they met each other in summer 2015 and started mixing their music and bad influence amongst the crowds and youth. Influenced by everything from old German hip-hop through Peaches, the ‘Goldene Zitronen’, Hole and Kurt Weill to John Frusciante, Suzi Quatro and Kraftwerk: this singer and bassist pair create a sound that hadn’t existed before in this way and in German. And if it does, then Prada Meinhoff doesn’t care. As long as it’s on fire!

They’ve already been able to win over audiences with their live abilities as the support act on tours with Tüsn (2016), Milliarden (2017) and DAF as well as with Peaches at the W-Festival 2017 in Frankfurt and Fischer-Z in the Columbia Theater Berlin. In April 2018 they went on a Germany-wide tour with MIA. Their single “Maske” (Mask) was released on Freudenhaus Recordings in May 2017 and the corresponding music video already has over 72,000 clicks on YouTube. In October 2017 the single “Express” was released, which is available on the Spotify playlists New Music Friday, ‘Studentenfutter’, Indie Radar and Indieland. The release of their debut album is planned for 13 April 2018.

Baby Dee & Alex Neilson
Monday, 23 April 2018, 8pm
Volksbühne Roter Salon
15 €

No more than half a year ago, Baby Dee, with accordion in tow and accompanied by her nephew on the guitar, presented herself in front of a sold-out Berghain; one that was feverishly anticipating Swans - perhaps one of the loudest bands in recent music history. That takes guts. But for someone who had already collaborated on Antony and the Johnsons’ first album, was the protégé of Current 93’s David Tibet, and boasts musicians like Will Oldham and Andrew WK on their own album, it wasn’t as overwhelming as it sounds. Dee’s solo work is impressive. Over six studio albums she's primarily celebrated the stripped-back sound of the piano, adding guitars, e-bass and other instrumentation to her output over the years. On her upcoming tour Accordion, Piano and Organ, she will be accompanied by the Trembling Bells' drummer Alex Neilson, who’s already spun his drumsticks for the likes of Bonnie “Prince” Billy and Scott Fagan.
