The Volksbühne's programme for April 2018

What if women ruled the world. Inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s satire Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964), Yael Bartana initiates a forum for the investigation of possible alternatives and actions in a male-dominated world. Every evening, actresses meet with internationally renowned experts - women who are defence advisers, soldiers, politicians, peace activists, human rights activists and leading thinkers - to formulate new strategies to tackle crises. Intertwining fiction and serious political experiment, together they attempt to solve pressing global problems and keep the Doomsday Clock from reaching midnight. German debut on 12 April.

For Vortex Temporum (2013) and the internationally acclaimed exhibition Work / Travail / Arbeid (2015), Belgian choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker has engaged two extraordinary ensembles: her Rosas dance company, and the Ictus Ensemble, which specialises in new music. The focus of both works is Vortex Temporum (English: swirl of times), a late work by French composer Gérard Grisey. Together they explore how time thickens and stretches, shrinks and then unfurls again. Following the presentation of Vortex Temporum, the dancers and musicians transform the choreography into an exhibition, in dialogue with the score and the stage. The audience turns into exhibition visitors, musicians turn into dancers, dancers into sculptures, instruments into objects. Vortex Temporum, guest performance beginning on 20 April; Work / Travail / Arbeid, German debut, from 26 April.

Other new events in April: the German debut of Concorde by Georgia Gardner Gray in the Grüner Salon; the world premiere of the third play by Calla Henkel and Max Pitegoff, also in the Grüner Salon; the online premiere of Jan Bonny and Alex Wissel’s web series Rheingold on Volksbühne Fullscreen (the premiere has been rescheduled from 12.03. to 23.04.); and Judith Butler’s presentation of her The space-time of resistance lecture.

Tickets for all events in April are available beginning on 1 March at the Volksbühne box office, by telephone on +49 (0) 30 2406 5777 and online at
