Literature and Philosophy in the Volksbühne in January 2018

On 16 January, the Passagen Gespräche discussion series, in cooperation with the Passagen Verlag, will take place in the Volksbühne for the first time. Peter Engelmann, founder and publisher of the Passagen publishing house, has invited Jean-Luc Nancy, one of the most important contemporary philosophers, to be his first guest. Their conversation will focus on ways to reappropriate democracy in times shaped by political control by international corporations and lobbyists.

On 18 January, iO Tillett Wright will present his book Darling Days: A Memoir on the main stage. Published in Germany last September, it recounts the search for authenticity in a lost place. Living in New York's East Village at the end of the 80's, iO is six years old and doesn't want to be a girl anymore. So iO presents himself as a boy. In addition to iO Tillett Wright, Salome Kiessling, Parisa Madani and Nathalie Seiss will also read. The evening will be moderated by journalist and blogger Kübra Gümüsay.

Armen Avanessian, philosopher, political scientist and conférencier for the Armen Avanessian & Enemies series, is hosting four events in the Roter Salon in January. On 10.01. with Anke Hennig, Ludwig Engel, Joanna Kamm, Georg Diez and Christopher Roth et. al.; on 13.01. with Marcus Steinweg; on 15.01. with Antonia Alampi, Victoria Ivanova, Harm van den Dorpel, Mathew Dryhurst, Marta Ferreira de Sá and Benedict Singleton, et. al.; and on 22.01. with THE AGENCY and Leif Randt.

On 19 January, the Roter Salon will host the 30th anniversary celebration of the Herzattacke arts and literature magazine, published by the artist collective of the same name. Having also made a name for itself on the fringes of the international literary business, the magazine's 100th issue will be honoured with readings and music.
