January concerts in the Volksbühne: Hauschka & Alma Quartet and Roedelius & Kasar

The Volksbühne Berlin is proud to present the following concerts in January:

New Year's Concert: Hauschka & Alma Quartet
Support: Ava Bonam
Monday, 1 January 2018, 8 pm
DJ beginning at 7 pm in the Parkettcafé: Falko Teichmann
Volksbühne Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz

Wood, felt, aluminium foil, ping-pong balls and gaffer tape are just some of the materials and objects Düsseldorf-based sound researcher Volker Bertelmann uses – under the pseudonym Hauschka – to explore the prepared piano's limits. Beginning with the rhythms of electronic dance music, he moves around the grand piano on his own path through the sonic worlds of composers like Eric Satie, Claude Debussy or John Cage. Hauschka returns to the Volksbühne for the traditional New Year's concert with support from the Alma Quartet, some of Amsterdam's most accomplished orchestral musicians.

Inspired by artists such as Tori Amos and Marissa Nadler, Ava Bonam fills the first half of the evening with her elegant, spherical arrangements.

Roedelius & Kasar
Sunday, 14 January 2018, 8 pm
Volksbühne Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz

Hans-Joachim Roedelius is one of the godfathers of cosmic music and krautrock. With his bands Cluster and Harmonia, which were created during the pioneering age of the late 60s and 70s, he played a key role in shaping and defining these musical styles. Arnold Kasar is almost thirty years younger, and came of age musically in 90s Berlin. He broke open the border between electronic dance music and jazz, collaborating with bands and musicians such as Micatone, Nylon and Friedrich Liechtenstein. He was also active as an ensemble musician, arranger and producer around the influential Berlin label Sonar Kollektiv. Kasar has a classical piano education, Roedelius never learned to read music. As different as their approaches may be, they’re united by their openness to all musical forms: through the delicate piano and atmospheric electronic sounds in their Einfluss (Influence) project, Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Arnold Kasar develop a unique chemistry.
