World premiere on 30 September: Mohammad al-Attar and Omar Abusaada debut their Euripides adaptation Iphigenia in Hangar 5 of the former Tempelhof airport

In Iphigenia, Berlin-based Syrian dramatist Mohammad al-Attar will present an adaptation of the classical Greek drama, which he developed with the actresses - ten young women from Syria - and theatre director Omar Abusaada from Damascus. This Volksbühne Berlin production is premiering on 30 September 2017 at 8pm in Tempelhof's Hangar 5.

Mohammad al-Attar and Omar Abusaada's collaboration began several years ago. In 2013, they directed Euripides' The Trojan Women with amateur actresses from Syria living in Jordan. The Syrians' biographies merged with motifs from classical Greek tragedy. In 2014, they presented Antigone of Shatila in Beirut, another adaptation of a Greek classic. This production was also created in collaboration with non-professional actresses who had fled from Syria. With Iphigenia, Abusaada and al-Attar complete their trilogy of classical antiquity.

In their adaptation, Euripides' material is staged as an audition. Ten young actresses compete for the role of Iphigenia over ten scenes. They contribute various elements, stories and images from their respective personal histories, which Abusaada and al-Attar connect to motifs and passages from the original text.
