Press notes, 17 July 2017

The last press notes from us before the summer break. We would also like to remind you that the press office will be open all summer for your questions and requests. A short outlook: The first rehearsals for Susanne Kennedy’s Women in Trouble will be starting in the Volksbühne am Rosa Luxemburg Platz on 21 August. A press conference with Boris Charmatz is planned at Tempelhof for 7 September.

Great success for Boris Charmatz last week at the Manchester International Festival. At the preview premiere of his new choreography 10,000 Gestures, a production of the Volksbühne, there were standing ovations from the audience and rave reviews. 10,000 Gestures for 24 dancers is the centrepiece of A Dancer’s Day, the 6-hour choreography for dancers and audience, which will have its world premiere on 14 September in Hangar 5 at Tempelhof. “Boris Charmatz’s show tests the limits of how we experience dance. A thrilling blizzard of movement,” (Judith Mackrell in The Guardian). “There’s a bewildering impression of chaos, but so the sense of a calm centre at the heart of the storm. There’s so much happening, it is hard to watch, impossible to grasp. This sense of unstoppable momentum grips 10,000 Gestures” (Sarah Crompton in the Observer). “Arresting, exhilarating and challenging – Boris Charmatz and his troupe offered up a thought-provoking dance performance. 10,000 Gestures is a triumph.” (Simon Binns, Manchester Evening News).

From January, Anja Aronowsky Cronberg will be the host of the series Appearances or the Art of Impression in the Rote Salon of the Volksbühne. Over the past few days the founder and editor of Vestoj – The Platform for Critical Thinking on Fashion has got everyone talking. She released an interview with Lucinda Chambers, the recently dismissed fashion director of British Vogue, which expressed “unusually frank criticism of the 21st-century fashion ecosystem,” (New York Times). Due to pressure from the legal department of Condé Nast Limited and Edward Enninful OBE, it was taken off the internet the same day, but is now available again in an edited version on Vestoj.
