Press notes, 24.08.2017

Yesterday morning, to mark the end of the theatrical break, the new director Chris Dercon, managing director Thomas Walter and programme director Marietta Piekenbrock greeted the theatre staff at the opening of the new season. To great applause, 23 of the staff were honoured for their multiple years of working devotion to the theatre – 15 staff members celebrated 25 years, five 30, one 35 and two staff members, an amazing 40 years. Hats off!

THE NEW WEBSITE IS NOW ONLINE

At www.volksbuehne.berlin the new website is now online. In addition to the programme, service and ticket sales, you’ll also find for the first time in a theatre the Volksbühne Fullscreen online – the first digital performance stage, accessible to all visitors. The first premiere is on 12 November with Massacre: Variations on a Theme by Alexandra Bachzetsis, followed by Alexander Kluge's film column Im Auge der Libelle from 17 November, and on 3 December the premiere of the web series Charisma by Sarah M. Harrison und Wojciech Kosma.

FIRST REHEARSALS START AT ROSA LUXEMBURG PLATZ

Susanne Kennedy is the first director of the new season, and she will be starting her rehearsals (Women in Trouble, to be premiered on 30 November) this week in the Volksbühne am Rosa Luxemburg Platz. In its latest edition, SPEX writes: “Susanne Kennedy’s productions are are ‘plastikkunst’, artificial performance art that pushes classical theatre to its limits. That’s probably why she is one of the most sought-after directors in the country.”

CALLA HENKEL AND MAX PITEGOFF IN MOUSSE MAGAZINE

In an interview for Mousse Magazine, Calla Henkel and Max Pitegoff, who will be opening the Grüne Salon at the Volksbühne twice weekly from November as a bar and stage, talk about their work in Berlin. The occasion is their current exhibition at the Cabinet Gallery in London (until 9 September). Their studio is currently housed in the former billiard room of the Kreuzberg Pub, Bierhaus Urban, which is open around the clock. The Mousse Magazine article explains how a regular at the Bierhaus, who has been reading the Berliner Zeitung seated on the same bar stool every morning for 25 years, inspired the routines of Calla Henkel and Max Pitegoff.
