Season opening: Fous de danse – All Berlin Dances at Tempelhof

On Sunday 10 September the Volksbühne Berlin will be celebrating the launch of the season 17/18 with the 10-hour dance performance Fous de danse – All Berlin Dances at Tempelhof, a collaboration between the Volksbühne and the Musée de la danse under the artistic direction of Boris Charmatz, in cooperation with Sandra Neuveut. From 12 am to 10 pm, the huge airfield will be transformed into a collective stage for the day, a dance to which the whole city is invited: warm-up, participatory choreographies, ensemble scenes, a giant soul train, traditional dances, a moving labyrinth of solo dancers and a dance floor. For the past two decades, Boris Charmatz has been one of the most radical protagonists of contemporary dance — the director of the Musée de la danse in Rennes will be part of the artistic team at the Volksbühne as a choreographer and dancer from the next season.

Highlights from the programme: Brit Rodemund and Christopher Roman from the Dance On Ensemble will dance William Forsythe’s duet Catalogue (First Edition), Raphaëlle Delauney will be adapting Roman Photo by Boris Charmatz together with the P14 youth theatre of the Volksbühne, Marie Houdin and Raphael Hillebrand will be staging a giant soul train and Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker will be dancing Violin Phase and an excerpt from her acclaimed duo Partita 2 with Boris Charmatz. Different protagonists of the dance scene from Berlin and elsewhere are involved: Staatliche Ballet Schule Berlin, hip-hop kids from the Flying Steps Academy, students of the HZT (Inter-University Centre for Dance) Berlin, the BEM Folk Dance Ensemble in cooperation with the Conservatory of Turkish Music Berlin. DJ Alex Murray-Leslie from Chicks On Speed will be providing the music for the dance floor.

Free admission for the whole family, doors open at 11:30 am. Access is through the main entrance of the airport building at Platz der Luftbrücke, as well as from the Tempelhofer Feld. Glass bottles are not allowed on the flight apron, meals and drinks can be purchased there. Participants and visitors can come and go as they please during the ten-hour performance.

Fous de danse is the kick-off of the 4-week opening programme (10.09 – 06.10.) on the grounds of the historic Tempelhof Airport, the new temporary and flexible stage location of the Volksbühne Berlin. Two more Boris Charmatz pieces will follow — the world premiere of A Dancer’s Day (14.09.) and the German premiere of danse de nuit (Night Dance, 21.09.), the stage premiere of Iphigenia by Mohammad Al Attar and Omar Abusaada, as well as the concert Let Them Eat Chaos by Kate Tempest with orchestra and choir (06.10.).
