SP 03 - Experiments

Cinema got its start with the short film, as an experiment. In street scenes, entertaining bits, and humorous gags lasting but a single minute, the pioneers of cinema played with the possibilities offered by the camera. As the feature-length film came to replace the short film relatively early on, the latter was able to branch out into new territory, becoming in the 1920s a field for playful exploration of the abstract, liberated from the need for a subject, and later a sort of trial run for future filmmakers, freed of economic imperatives. All of this still echoes today, in digital glitches, formal gambles, and works playing with the limits of film material, in which form self-assuredly triumphs over content in the quest to open up the sensual to shared experience.
