enfant

for 3 machines, 9 dancers and a group of children from Berlin
Dance, Performance

With enfant (2011) the French dancer and choreographer has succeeded in creating a seminal piece. The restaging of the original version begins with an eerie machine dance and ends almost rambunctiously. Children run about, shaking, singing, jumping, and frolicking, catapulting themselves out of a beautifully sad experiment, which also wants to recall the phantoms of abducted children and the childhood of the father of the choreographer fleeing from the Nazis. enfant (child) is one of the most intense and moving dance performances of the 21st century. Silently and rigorously, it forces our attention onto our relation to the essence of the child. What, Charmatz asks, has happened to our view of children?
